50 States Project (SPI 5.3.6)
Ladies and gentlemen, we are almost finished! The only remaining SPI that we will have to cover for this school year is SPI 5.3.6. This SPI deals with simply being able to locate the 50 states on a map. I have decided to use a research project to introduce this material. Also, we will be using information from the NCAA tournament to practice locating each U.S. State.
The guidelines for the project are listed below:
Students should:
- Label (correctly!) and color each regional map.
- On the back of each map or on a separate sheet of paper, students should list 5 interesting facts for each of the states in that region. Students will use classroom iPods or their own devices to research this information.
- Students will take this information at the end of the week and construct a persuasive travel brochure for the state of their choosing.
Attached below are copies of the NCAA Tournament classroom activity, regional maps, as well as the rubric for the travel brochure. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

A Tale of Segregation: Fetching Water (SPI 5.5.8)
Today in class, we began our unit on the Civil Rights Movement. In order for us to truly understand the accomplishments of this important time in American history, we must look at life for African-Americans in during the era of segregation. We learned that segregation simply means, "separate." For example, African-American children were forced to go to separate schools and African-American citizens were forced to use separate facilities. Students were asked to complete a KWL chart and then they should read the attached reading and answer the comprehension questions.

Results of the New Deal and Challenges of the Dust Bowl- SPI's 5.2.2, 5.2.5
Due to the snow days, we condensed some of the content from last week into one class period. Today, we briefly reviewed some of the results of the New Deal. We categorized them as the "3 R's," relief, recovery, and reform. We know that FDR's New Deal was aimed at helping those in need (relief), helping the economy bounce back from the Great Depression (recovery), and making sure that the same mistakes aren't made in the future (reform).
We also analyzed a primary source relating to the issues that farmers were facing due to the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. Last week, we learned that farmers were hit especially hard even prior to Black Tuesday. I've attached a letter from a girl named Grace, who lived in McCracken, KS. Students were asked to perform a close read over this source and complete the attached close read graphic organizer. If you have any questions over this content or anything else from this unit, please feel free to contact me. Thanks!

Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Fireside" Chats
We began today's class by constructing a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the presidencies of Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Following this, we analyzed the election results and interpreted the importance of Roosevelt's win and his immediate goals. We listened to his first "Fireside" chat, rebuilding the confidence of the American people in the banking system. After listening to his address, students were asked to work with their shoulder partner to create a script for their very own "Fireside" chat rebuilding consumer confidence in some part of the economy during the Great Depression. We will work on this activity for two days and students will record their audio in the form of an online podcast.
